CombiMovie (freeware mpeg joiner)

CombiMovie is freeware which can combine two or more mpg/mpeg files into a single continuous mpg file. It works very fast, almost as fast as copying the files itself! Suitable for digital camera or internet movies.

We’re so confident we let our competitors advertise on our site

CombiMovie is an application to combine two or more mpg/mpeg files into one continuous mpg file. It works very fast, as fast as copying the files! How come? Because what it does is only reading the sourcefiles, grab the meaningful bytes and then write it into the target files. Thanks to the robust mpg file structure.

As you may have noticed, there are many people who put their home movie on the internet in a set of small runable mpgs (less than 3MB each) to make it easier to download. CombiMovie was made to make it possible for those who download these mpgs to put them back again later. CombiMovie is also suitable to join mpegs created using digital camera. Just put it in a folder and open it.

Since each peaces of these mpgs are runable, loophole on the serie will not stop the combined file from running (although some scene will be missing then).

To combine your mpg files, first select the directory location using the structure on the left side. The FileList on the right side will show when there are mpg/mpeg file(s) in that folder.

To start joining the files, two or more files should be selected. The start button will not be enabled until there are two or more files selected. As with any other windows application you can select an item then hold down the Shift key and select another and all the items in between the two selected items also become selected. If the you don't hold down the Shift or Ctrl key while selecting a second item, the first selected item becomes unselected. In other words, you must use the Ctrl key to select multiple noncontiguous items, or the Shift key to select a range of items.

Another way to select the files is through Menu Edit|Select all.

By default the output file would be created on the selected directory. The output filename may be entered on the bottom-left edit.

Click on the Start button to start the process. Starting with the top most down. A progress bar will be shown. Be patient, since mpeg files are usually huge. Even simply copying it would take some time. You may press cancel button to stop and cancel the process.

Limitations:
  1. CombiMovie should be used to combine only files with the same characteristics (same dimension, compression method, color depth etc). CombiMovie will not check whether these are true before joining, but off course you may try to join two different characteristics of movie, and see what happens. In many cases it will still be running.
  2. Solved in version 1.1. CombiMovie is made with speed in mind, and to achieve that each files which will be combined are read in first into memory before further processing. After writing the data chunk, the memory will be freed for the next file etc. Base on this fact, considering to limit your to be combined files each not to be more than 8 mb. On the other hand, the total size is practically limited only by the hard-drive space.
  3. I haven't made CombiMovie to check first for the available space before it proceeds.
  4. .CombiMovie can not join AVI or ASF movie format.
  5. Solved in version 1.1. You can not change the order of sequence through the interface. The only way available is by renaming it (make copies first) to match the sequence that you expect. I haven't had any time to add this feature yet.
